Spanish Peaks Surrounding Lava Lake

Spread the love

Lava Lake Trail is a 6-mile heavily trafficked out and back trail that leads to a stunning lake surrounded by the Spanish Peaks. The lake is in the Gallatin National Forest near the Gallatin Gateway in Montana. Rated as moderate, this trail features wildflowers. The trail includes a beautiful lake surrounded by the Spanish Peaks.

The trail is straightforward. It gains an elevation of 1,620 feet for a tough but rewarding 3-mile incline. After climbing above the summer cabins, the trail enters the Cascade Canyon. It inclines to the natural dam and leads up to Lava Lake.

My buddy Carter and I tackled this trail on a Saturday morning in mid-June. We over heard a lady mention that she had never seen it as busy as it was. This meant, if solitude is what you’re in search of then this is not the hike for you.

We arrived at the lake and continued down the left side. We passed several groups that were relaxing and soaking in the amazing view. Instead of stopping, we continued on. We walked halfway up the shore. There was a nice lakeside view where we ate lunch and recharged our batteries. After we finished chilling it was time to head down valley.

We noticed there were several species of wild berries along the trail. This would be the perfect hike in early fall during berry season. We saw strawberry, huckleberry, raspberry, and blackberry bushes. I’ll take this moment to note, that trails with wild berries attract bears. They’re especially popular for the creatures when it’s berry season. It is imperative that all hikers carry bear spray for their own protection. This is especially important in Montana as Grizzly bears roam the land.

Lava Lake hike is fantastic. It’s the perfect way to spend the morning. I’d love to see how this hike is during the week, when it’s less busy. It’s a trail I’d recommend for everyone. I caution those that’re new to the outdoors bring plenty of water.

This is a place I’d 100% revisit and cannot wait to return during berry season. The trail is great for exercise. Hikers have the opportunity to fill themselves full of delicious, wild berries. It’s the perfect escape from the busy cities, for an afternoon in nature. If you find yourself in Bozeman, make sure to check out this hike!
