Playa Zipolite

First Place to Hang Free in Mexico

Zipolite is a small beach-side community, located on Oaxaca’s southern Pacific Coast that is the first place to hang free in Mexico! This beach is mostly known for being Mexico’s first and only legal nude beach. The municipality of Zipolite is technically covered by the city of San Pedro Pochutla. Pochutla officially declared Playa Zipolite legally nude as of 2016, even though it’s been officially nude for over 40 years. It’s even said to be the best place for nudism in Mexico.

The area retains much of its hippy vibe and free-love culture that made the area notable in the 1970’s. Even the “drug” or Marijuana culture is generally relaxed within the region. However, it’s still advised to practice caution if one decides to partake. It is federally illegal across Mexico, albeit decriminalized, but illegal none the less.

Incredible growth of some cactus next to the beach of Zipolite.

The beach community of Zipolite contains about a one-mile stretch of pristine medium grain golden sand beach, that is roughly 40 kilometers (or about 25 miles) long. The water color is a mixture between clear blues and greens, creating a beautiful clear teal color. The beach itself is lined with restaurants, palm trees, rustic cabins, hotel rooms, and even a few high-end lodgings on the west end.

Swimming can be practiced, but it’s urged that any participant take heed of the strong undertow and erratic currents. This beach has seen a large number of drownings thanks to said currents found just off shore. They move in a circular pattern and should be noted for their strength even though they’re not very wide. Caution should be practiced at all times.

Due to the nature of the area being filled with international citizens, there is a large variety of foods to choose from. There are several restaurants from traditional Mexican to international (such as Italian) to vegetarian and vegan, providing plenty of choices for everyone.

I spent an afternoon here, taking a day trip from the nearby town of Mazunte. It took about 10 minutes by collectivo and only cost 20 pesos (or one dollar) one way. There are about two roads that run through town, and they are rife with incredible street art. Unfortunately, due to the nature of a nude beach, I wasn’t able to get many photos of the stunning landscape.

Zipolite Street Art
My favorite piece of street art that I found along the buildings of Zipolite.

Zipolite was a nice stop that is a little off the beaten path. It wasn’t because of total seclusion, but the knowledge that not many people get to experience this mini paradise. The word seems to have spread in recent years about this beach and I’m sure being a featured in the film “Y Tu Mama Tambien” didn’t help.

I would absolutely return here, but would most likely day trip to the other small beaches around the area instead. Overall Zipolite was a fantastic experience. One I’d definitely recommend for the more adventurous traveler that wants to spend a day connecting with nature while getting in some time on the beach. If you’re looking to let the coconuts and or sausage hang free, then don’t miss out on the small beach settlement of Zipolite!
