Yellow Belly Backpackers Hostel & Cahal Pech

Spread the love

What an incredible hostel with such friendly staff! I love absolutely everything about this place. The hostel is nestled into the mountain side, it’s quiet, clean, and the perfect place to take a little break from the fast-paced events of travelling.

The Yellow Belly Backpackers Hostel is the perfect stop for backpackers and couples alike! They offer an array of options, meeting the needs of just about anyone that comes through the door.

Hostel Reception Area
This is what you’ll see when you first walk inside.

It’s not only the most affordable hostel in the valley but one of the best locations in town too. They have the option of both four and six-person dorm rooms along with the choice for a private room. The guest also has the choice of selecting with or without aircon.

The hostel is relatively new and incredibly clean. I don’t think I’ve used a hostel kitchen with a better selection of pots and pans or cutlery either! The pans are well taken care of and a pleasure to cook with.

Full Kitchen
Find your inner chef with Yellow Belly’s fully stocked kitchen!

The beds were all hand built, and each one comes with three outlets, meaning guests can charge their devices at once. The dorm rooms include the locker cubbies that guests can keep their valuables safely tucked away in.

The showers and bathrooms are always clean. The shower pressure might be the best I’ve experience in Central America. The pressure is perfect for releasing a tight back and neck muscles after long days of working on the computer, exploring some Mayan ruins, or just taking a leisurely stroll through town.

Common Area
Get your relax or work on with the incredible view from the common area.

Only five minutes’ walk from the hostel is the stunning archeological site of Cahal Pech. I hadn’t heard much about the site so didn’t expect much. However, this left me pleasantly surprised.

Cahal Pech has a $10 Belizean ($5 USD) entrance fee. However, the office closes at five pm, so if you show up 10 or 15 minutes late then visitors are gifted free entrance. The site is sprawling for being on the smaller side. What distinguishes these from the Mayan ruins of Mexico is the accessibility. Every structure, staircase, and pyramid were all open to explore and climb. Well worth the $5!

The Yellow Belly Backpackers Hostel is located only a five-minute walk from the nearest bus stop. Guests will discover relatively easy access heading to Guatemala or Xunantunich Archeological Site. There are several markets close by that sell fresh affordable fruits and vegetables. This includes a fantastic fruit stand directly next to a BBQ restaurant.

Cahal Pech Archeological Site
The main pyramid of Cahal Pech is open for visitors to climb!

Guests of this hostel that don’t like to cook won’t find any issues either. This is a place that is surrounded by local street foods and restaurants. Everything a person would need can be found within a five-minute walk from the hostel doors.

As previously mentioned, the staff is incredibly friendly. Bubbles, the owner, and his staff are eager to show guests what makes this area such a special place. If guests are planning to head into Guatemala, then the hostel can call and schedule a rapid covid test that is done at the hostel at the guests’ convenience. This service can be scheduled to fit around those daily plans.

I can’t say enough about how wonderful this hostel has been. Anytime I come back to Belize, I’ll be making a stop into San Ignacio, just to stay in this wonderful atmosphere. Get your friends and family together and come down to Yellow Belly Backpackers for a hostel experience like no other!
